William Shakespeare FACTS and a trip to his houses in Stratford Upon Avon, UK
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford Upon Avon on 23rd April 1564 (400 years ago, we know the date that he was baptised so this is used as they mostly were baptised within a week of birth.) He is most famous for his play-writing, but what about his life behind that?
He wrote a total of over 37 plays, how many have you read?
He also wrote sonnets, (a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line) 154 to be exact!
His grave lies at Holy Trinity Church, you can visit the site too.
In his early life he grew up with his seven other siblings.
His father was a glove maker, you can see this at the Shakespeare Birth-trust. His father was also a Major but he was found guilty and William was withdrawn from school. King Edward VII Grammar School.
William Shakespeare hated school and he was to draw a lot of these feelings to his school through his plays. Back in Tutor times school was six days a week, 6am until 5pm.
He wrote his plays during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
Shakespeare’s wife’s name was Anne Hathaway.
Shakespeare’s theatre group performed in the Globe Theatre and the Blackfriars Theatre
Before Shakespeare wrote plays for a living, he worked as an actor with the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.
Shakespeare is sometimes called ‘The Bard of Avon’ – a bard is another word for a poet. This word was used a lot last year during Shakespeare's celebrated 'death' year, that's why I know it.
It was said that Shakespeare poached deer at Charlecote Park (now owned by the National Trust and a great place to visit), he was put infront of the Justice of the Peace, Lord Fairfax Lucy. He fled his bail and went to London to seek fame. He wrote about Lord Fairfax Lucy in the Merry Wives of Windsor to get back at him. The part was not very flattering to him.
