ELMER the Elephant stage play

I wanted to see how a stage play can be interpreted from a book, I had the chance to see this with Elmer the Elephant. Based on the first book by David Mckee it was meant for really small children who probably have the book read to them almost every night, some might even know some of it off by heart.

The set was made of fabric and was very well made. The detail of the bush background made from colourful material and outlined in pen was really great and gave a feel from the book. The actors were loud but I think that helped keep the interest of the little children, they were so good in the way they interpreted the animal characters. I also think that Zebra was one of my favourites. There was springy moss which were trumpets disguised with fabric leaves.

I liked how the clever head pieces changed the actors into new animals for Elmer to meet. The props weren't many (mostly a banana for monkey) but done well.

Elmer would boing on these and sing a colourful song. As in the book the moral of the story is lovely and comes across very well.

My sister loved it and I would recommend going to see it for anyone with a small child who likes songs, colour and Elmer the Elephant book.
