AUTHOR MEET UP - Abi Elphinstone
Abi Elphinstone is the author of three successful books;
The Dream Snatcher
The Night Spinner
The Shadow Keeper
The books are about a girl called Moll and her quest to find the Amulets of Truth. She has with her a wildcat called Gryff. Her father once stopped Abi in her tracks whilst out walking the Highlands in Scotland because there was two yellow eyes looking at her, it was an endangered wildcat. here is a boy called Alfie too with more to find out from this weird character.
Abi told me how she went to see a Gypsy man and he told her all about Gypsy beliefs and legends too. The three books out now are based on Gypsy stories and Abi has told them very well. Abi's favourite book is the Shadow Keeper and that she is most like Moll in the stories.
Abi travels around the world and goes on exciting journeys to get he inspiration for her books. She also looks at picture online to inspire her too.
Her next book is about a girl who hunts with Eagles.
Abi told me about how she was rejected 96 times before she got a publisher... look at her now. Her message is to never give up and to look at everything as you never know where an idea will come from.
I also learnt that Moll's surname came from a shampoo bottle, Molly Pecksniff! Funny.
Abi mentions that once she was looking online at images and she saw a girl with an eagle about to leave her hand. She looked the image up and found that the girl came from a tribe overseas and she was the girl in her tribe (the rest were men that tamed eagles). Abi decided that she would go and see this girl, so she did.
On the first night they got out of their tents and they saw wolf tracks among their camp, from this she decided to put a wolf in the story, which later changed to an another animal - you will see this when you read the book. When Abi went to a shack in the mountains and saw a girl wrestling a cat! So this could be in the next book too, her new book sounds like it will be very interesting indeed.
I enjoyed meeting Abi and understanding about not giving up and where inspiration can come from. Abi also sign all three of my books too.
