AUSTENTATIOUS - Not a Jane Austen Classic!
Last Thursday I saw the most fabulous stage show, Austentatious. I was allowed to stay up quite late on a school night as a special treat.
It was a improvised, "Impro, Impro" (Demon Dentist, Drama Teacher quote), show based on unheard novels from Jane Austen. Members of the audience were asked to write their suggestions for her 'unknown' book down on paper and the cast picked one at random for them to play out by improvisation.
I didn't really know what to expect, but I loved reading Pride and Prejudice particularly and thought this would be good no matter what.
The subject was Once Bitter, Twice Shandy, I didn't get that really, probably an age thing, but I did laugh so so so so sooooo much at the play.
The characters where the best, Josephine, was a barmaid and originally from Devon, she was liked by all the men who entered the pub including Dexter a posh man, a bit dim but very lovely.
Mary, was really funny and a barmaid from Devon too. She also doubled up as the one eyed countess from abroad. When playing Mary she got hate mail from Devon and a bag of something smelly from Devon as well! She tried to move to London when the pub was being turned into a Gastropub but had been at the wrong coach stop for 4 years! London had been warned by Devon about her coming and so they stopped her from going into London. So she ended up in nomansland working in a Little Chef!!!!!!
Dexter, had to move out of his own bedroom for his younger brother returning from war, yes, WAR. His mother and father never noticed him and he took to making a high pitched noise to let them know he was in the same room. He even wore clothes that made him blend in because he worse left over curtain drapes. Dexter invented the train, saved the dog and painted the house all in his spare time!
This shows some of the randomness along with songrams at 5AM, army boys in the 1,000's on the train from war, spy's from the family, bugging in early 1800's.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS I LAUGHED SO MUCH, GO SEE THIS ITS AMAZING. I will be going again if I can :-)
