Book Quiz, WIN
(snippets from Kineton High School book competition above)
I love reading and competing, so a reading competition was right up my street. When I was in Year 5, there were two separate classes. The secondary school holds a competition for year 5's, six different schools took part when I went.
Out of the 57 children in my year our teachers had to choose just 4! I was one of the 4 picked. And since world book day was a few days before, everyone dressed up!
I was Elizabeth Bennett, a character I can totally relate to and love, I made the costume myself on my sewing machine out of a bed sheet. Adding to it a lace top I found from charity shop and the bonnet was put together by my Grandma.
The set task was to read a book and memorise some important events and relationships in the story. Upon arriving, we spotted all of the pupils at Kineton having their lunch. We were led to the library, where the contest was held, it had two levels and on the first and top level pairs of tables were laid out. Our group sat around the table with our sign and started chatting and revising about what happened in the book. As the other tables filed up with other schools we became even more nervous. The head teacher came in and handed each table a sheet…
The first round was on the actual book, we smashed it, getting only two wrong, and we had the highest score there! The next round was on the author of the book, none of us had done much research, we guessed and didn't do too bad. Then a lunch break. (I LOVED THE FOOD!) The third and final round was a general knowledge round on books. We nailed that round too, over all we were extremely proud of ourselves! It took quite some time for them to total the scores but it was announced, that for the first time…
WE HAD WON!!!
With a few pictures of us and collecting our prizes- Which included some W.H.Smith vouchers for our school, our choice of two books to take home and an engraved trophy- and furthermore we got to show it off at school and in assembly.
We walked into the playground and our Head Mistress asked how we did, she had been waiting to see how we'd done. We walked on through the playground, everyone had just come out for break time, we strode in victorious, whilst showing off the cup in hand. It was like something out of a Hank Zipzer paragraph, all it needed was Tim Heitz (http://timheitz.tumblr.com) front cover!
